Have you ever just wandered the isles of Target dreaming up your next room makeover? No, just me? Well I had looked at this plaid peel and stick wallpaper for a while and dreamt of many ways it could be used when finally the day came! Our laundry room was dying for a makeover! It’s just a simple pass room between the garage and a hallway but it needed to be more than that, it needed to be inspiring, fun, a landing spot.
Really the room itself is very functional, sturdy flooring, functional cabinet, hardworking washer and dryer. But it was the opposite of flash, and let’s face it, although functional these bones were dated. I wanted to turn this functional room into a warm and inviting space while keeping the bones of the room in place. And I started with the wallpaper.
I wanted to embrace the cabinet color and add an updated and inviting feel to the space so the black, grey and white plaid was the perfect compliment to the warm colors that were already in the space. There was too much warm yellowy color in the floor, walls and cabinet but it just needed to be toned down and redirected through the tones in the wallpaper and black layered rugs on the floor. I also added greenery through plants in the space to play off of the fact that there is a lot of warmth to the space (think cozy forest vibes). Adding texture was a also helpful for embracing this new color palette. I added a woven basket to keep on the dryer, different potted plants, layered rugs, a wooden stool and a felt laundry basket all adding different elements of texture to the space.
We actually took off the door between the hallway and laundry room too! Both of the doors in this pass through laundry way opened in, meaning you felt squeezed, and if someone tried to come in while you were unloading the dryer you were blocked in. So not practical in this family of six while trying to encourage kids to work on their own laundry! Now the space feels so much bigger and we can easily help each other and grab the laundry when needed.
